Vishwanathashtakam विश्वनाथाष्टकम्

Vishwanathashtakam (विश्वनाथाष्टकम्)

गङ्गातरंगरमणीयजटाकलापं
गौरीनिरन्तरविभूषितवामभागम् |
नारायणप्रियमनंगमदापहारं
वाराणसीपुरपतिं भज विश्वनाथम् ॥ १॥

Adore Siva, Who is the Lord of the city of Varanasi, Who is the Lord of the world, Whose tress-locks are held together by the beautiful waves of Ganga, Whose left side is adorned continuously by the presence of Gauri, Who is dear to Narayana, and Who absolves the pride of Kamadeva (Ananga).||1||

वाचामगोचरमनेकगुणस्वरूपं
वागीशविष्णुसुरसेवितपादपीठम् |
वामेनविग्रहवरेणकलत्रवन्तं
वाराणसीपुरपतिं भज विश्वनाथम् ॥ २॥

Adore Siva, Who is the Lord of the city of Varanasi, Who is the Lord of the world, Who is beyond the scope of the voice, Who has uncountable qualitative forms and manifestations, Whose lotus-feet is revered by Brahma, Vishnu and the demi-gods, and Who has His consort on the left side of His own form Ardhanarisvara.||2||

भूताधिपं भुजगभूषणभूषितांगं 
व्याघ्राजिनांबरधरं जटिलं त्रिनेत्रम् |
पाशांकुशाभयवरप्रदशूलपाणिं 
वाराणसीपुरपतिं भज विश्वनाथम् ॥३॥

Adore Siva, Who is the Lord of the city of Varanasi, Who is the Lord of the world, Who is the Lord of the ghosts, Who has snakes as ornaments on various parts of the body, Who has a hairy skin of the tiger as a cloth, Who has tress locks, Who has three eyes, Who holds a trident, and Who provides respite from the fear of rope and whip (of Yama).||3||


शीतांशुशोभितकिरीटविराजमानं
भालेक्षणानलविशोषितपंचबाणम् |
नागाधिपारचितभासुरकर्णपूरं
वाराणसीपुरपतिं भज विश्वनाथम् ॥ ४॥

Adore Siva, Who is the Lord of the city of Varanasi, Who is the Lord of the world, Who has a diamond adorned by dewdrops on His forehead, Who destroyed the five arrows of Kamadeva by emanating fire from His forehead, and Whose earrings are made by the king of snakes (Naga).||4||

पंचाननं दुरितमत्तमतङ्गजानां
नागान्तकं दनुजपुंगवपन्नगानाम् |
दावानलं मरणशोकजराटवीनां
वाराणसीपुरपतिं भज विश्वनाथम् ॥ ५॥

Adore Siva, Who is the Lord of the city of Varanasi, Who is the Lord of the world, Who has five faces in one of His forms, Who is like a lion for the intoxicated and proud persons, Who is like the destroyer of snake Garuda for the snake like mighty demons, and Who is like the fire for the forest like physical state of birth, grief and old age.||5||

तेजोमयं सगुणनिर्गुणमद्वितीयं
आनन्दकन्दमपराजितमप्रमेयम् |
नागात्मकं सकलनिष्कलमात्मरूपं
वाराणसीपुरपतिं भज विश्वनाथम् ॥६॥

Adore Siva, Who is the Lord of the city of Varanasi, Who is the Lord of the world, Who is filled with resplendence, Who is both formed and formless, Who is unprecedented, Who is the cloud of happiness, Who is undefeated and immeasurable, Who is surrounded by snakes, Who is indivisible (Brahma), and Who is matched only by Himself.||6||

रागादिदोषरहितं स्वजनानुरागं
वैराग्यशान्तिनिलयं गिरिजासहायम् |
माधुर्यधैर्यसुभगं गरलाभिरामं
वाराणसीपुरपतिं भज विश्वनाथम् ॥७॥

Adore Siva, Who is the Lord of the city of Varanasi, Who is the Lord of the world, Who is without qualities, Who is the happiness of those belonging to Him, Who is the abode of dispassion and peace, Who is the companion of Girija, Who is enticing, sweet and patient, and Who is the house of poison.||7||

आशां विहाय परिहृत्य परस्य निन्दां
पापे रतिं च सुनिवार्य मनः समाधौ |
आदाय हृत्कमलमध्यगतं परेशं
वाराणसीपुरपतिं भज विश्वनाथम् ॥८॥

Leaving behind hopes, destroying the fretful complains about others and the indulgence in sins, restraining the mind in meditation, bringing Paresh (Siva) to the middle of lotus-like mind, adore Him, Who is the Lord of the city of Varanasi, and Who is the Lord of the world.||8||

वाराणसीपुरपतेः स्तवनं शिवस्य
व्याख्यातमष्टकमिदं पठते मनुष्यः |
विद्यां श्रियं विपुलसौख्यमनन्तकीर्तिं
सम्प्राप्य देहविलये लभते च मोक्षम् ॥ ९॥

The man who studies this popular eight-canto eulogy on Siva, the ruler of Varanasi, attain Moksha at the time of death, after obtaining knowledge, wealth, friends, and immeasurable glory.||9||

विश्वनाथाष्टकमिदं यः पठेच्छिवसन्निधौ |
शिवलोकमवाप्नोति शिवेन सह मोदते ॥

Those who study this eight-canto eulogy on Visvanatha in the proximity of Siva (in Varanasi), achieve the world of Siva and then they rejoice with Him.
